Bird-Werner and Shaw House Newly Renovated Porches

Home

Welcome to the Ecumenical Community of Chautauqua (ECOC). We offer affordable housing during the 9-week Chautauqua season. Our three buildings are located within steps of the Amphitheater in the heart of Chautauqua.

We are a non-profit denominational house providing low-cost accommodations to individuals and families of all faiths. While sharing the kitchens and porches, guests can enjoy affordable meals, lively discussions, and opportunities to form lifelong friendships.

January 9, 2021

On behalf of the ECOC board and staff, we greet you and wish for you much grace and peace in 2021.

We are writing about the ECOC's plans for this summer. We have delayed posting our reservation application and information while the Institution's leadership ponders institution-wide plans and protocols. Representatives from all the religious houses, including the ECOC, and the Department of Religion have been meeting regularly, and Rev. Nathan Wilson is serving on a five-person coordinating committee for the Institution to discuss the
myriad issues related to the 2021 season.

The challenge for one and all is to determine how to maximize our ability to accommodate guests institution-wide while offering guests a safe and protocol-compliant setting. The ECOC has convened a panel of individuals to determine our own "sweet spot" between maximum number of guests and maximum safety. This letter is the panel's first outreach to you.

As is our custom, guests will submit a reservation request, along with a $100 deposit per week per room and consideration of a voluntary $30 upkeep gift per week per room. The 2021 Reservation Request and the ECOC Policies Acknowledgment forms will be available on the ECOC website (www.ecoc-chautauqua.org) by January 16, 2021.

The forms are to be printed out and mailed to the Registrar at the Ohio address written beneath the Registrar’s name below. (Please note that an on-line reservation program is not available at this time.) We will continue our practice of honoring the postmark date and priority by category, including clergy, volunteers, returning guests, and new guests.

According to what we know at this time, the ECOC will not be able to fill its rooms to the maximum as we seek to provide a safe environment for guests. Some allowances that we are all accustomed to may not be followed this year, such as multiple-week residencies and specific kitchen choices. We know, though, that you join with us in gratitude that we can anticipate even a partial opening of our facilities.

Of exceptional importance this year will be the General Accommodations Information document. It will be sent
separately once decisions have been finalized regarding the ECOC's summer 2021 safety protocols. If guidelines change
after the documents have been published, all guests will need to follow the latest posted information. A generous refund policy will be in place if changes in guidelines cause you to request a cancelation of your reservation.

Please know that we are working diligently to keep you informed in a timely manner. We know everyone is anxious to make their
Chautauqua plans for Summer 21. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
